On September 28, the West Island team of Little Brothers in Montreal marked a significant milestone: ten years of dedicated presence alongside isolated older adults in the region. This anniversary was celebrated in a warm atmosphere, surrounded by Great Friends, volunteers, partners, and community members.
A Decade of Building Meaningful Connections
Since 2015, our local team has been mobilizing tirelessly to break the social isolation of older adults. Thanks to 72 active volunteers and continuous support to 58 Great Friends, we have helped to build deep, meaningful human relationships.
Some of our most notable achievements include:
- The creation of “concert-tea” events in collaboration with Cedar Park Church, which have become beloved gatherings;
- The development of monthly activities with Norma McAllister Residence;
- An inspiring partnership with community police officers;
- The continuation of lasting intergenerational bonds that enrich the lives of both older adults and volunteers every day.
An Event Filled with Simplicity and Human Warmth
This simple yet heartfelt celebration brought people together. Laughter, conversations, and shared memories highlighted the human connections at the heart of this special day. As a gesture of appreciation, each Great Friend left with a bouquet of flowers — a small token to mark this meaningful moment.
Michel: 43 Years of Volunteer Commitment
Involved with Little Brothers for 43 years and active in the West Island for the past 3, Michel embodies generosity and constancy. A volunteer driver and caregiver for his mother, he is dedicated to creating deep bonds with the older adults he supports.
“We all have the ability to make a change, to be a beacon in the night, a hand in the fog. I’ve had a good life, I am privileged. Volunteering is a choice; life is a succession of choices.”
What touched him most? The look in a Great Friend’s eyes during a celebration — or those simple but powerful words:
“Thank you for not forgetting me.”
Lise: Simply Being Present
A volunteer since 2016, Lise joined Little Brothers to accompany people living alone. Her testimony is deeply sincere:
“Accompanying people who are alone is what made me want to get involved. It’s sad to know that some older people are completely on their own…”
Since the pandemic, a strong bond has developed with her Great Friend:
“She often told me I was the most important person in her current life.”
A Team Attuned to Its Community
The West Island team of Little Brothers stands out for its ability to reach older adults living farther from urban centers, where opportunities to build connections are rarer. Thanks to the commitment of an entire community — coordinator, volunteers, and partners — we continue to make a difference, one relationship at a time.
Will You Be Part of the Next Beautiful Story?
This 10th anniversary reminded us of one essential truth: it is human connections that change lives. Behind every smile, every bouquet, every moved glance, there is someone who dared to reach out.
You too can create lasting bonds, offer your presence, and make a real difference in the life of an older adult.
