Sometimes all it takes is a simple gesture to light up a life. The story of our Great Friend, Mr. Latour, is a wonderful illustration of this.
When we met him, we were immediately struck by his kindness and discretion. An avid field hockey fan, now a resident of a retirement home, he always keeps a Canadiens cap close to him. “I’d like to go and see a game, but it’s too expensive,” he confided, a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
A chain of generosity
Moved by the article that appeared in the Journal de Montréal last December, the Evirum teams wanted to do their part to break the isolation of seniors. On learning of Mr. Latour’s passion for the Canadiens, they decided to give him a priceless gift: tickets to a game at the Bell Centre on January 6.
When we told him the news, his enthusiasm was immediate. “Oh, I’d love that!” he exclaimed, a radiant smile lighting up his face.
An evening rich in emotion
To accompany Mr. Latour on this adventure, we called on Sylvain, a volunteer who has been involved with us for the past year. A great field hockey fan himself, he didn’t hesitate for a second to share this unique moment.
When they arrived at the Bell Centre, a surprise awaited them: front-row seats!
“We were so close to the action, it was impressive! Seeing the players run across the ice, seeing how agile they were despite their imposing stature… It was magical,” recounts Sylvain, still overcome with emotion.
As for Mr. Latour, he doesn’t just watch. He lives every moment to the full, clapping his hands to the rhythm of the famous Hey! Hey! Hey! and sharing his memories of yesteryear with Sylvain. He recalls with amusement the Forum of yesteryear, comparing its atmosphere to that of the Bell Centre.
The game ended in victory for the Canadiens, but the greatest triumph of the evening was elsewhere. Mr. Latour had just realized a dream he had cherished for years. As he left the arena, stars in his eyes, he had only one word on his lips: “Thank you for everything.
