Mme Trudel: Maintaining Autonomy Despite the Challenges of Old Age

“Getting older is a journey that evolves from day to day.”

Mme Trudel is an energetic woman whose life story is marked by her determination and independence. Born in Saint-Prosper-de-Champlain, in Mauricie, she left her home village at the age of 17 to settle in Montréal, where she has lived for more than five decades.

Mme Trudel spent 52 years at the same address on Berri Street inVilleray, before moving to a private residence in the spring of 2024.

Committed to maintaining her independence, Mme Trudel lived alone for most of her life. This was a choice she made to preserve her own space and freedom, even when she was in a relationship.

Her professional experience working as a nurse’s aide in a CHSLD for several years reinforced her conviction that she never wanted to lose her independence.

After retiring at the age of 54, Mme Trudel continued to make her own decisions and life choices.

However, moving into a residence has led to many sacrifices, including being separated from her dog. This was particularly difficult, as he was a source of much comfort and companionship. Fortunately, she was able to keep her beloved cat.

“Each person ages in their own way. Help yourself age well and don’t give up.”

For Mme Trudel, aging is not a decline, but rather an opportunity to continue living life to the fullest, while taking care of herself and staying active. Her philosophy is simple and inspiring.

Even in the face of the changes associated with aging, Mme Trudel remains positive, proving that this period of life can be rich and fulfilling.

Thanks to Little Brothers, she can participate in activities that allow her to meet people and socialize.

What are her hopes for the future? She wants to continue taking care of herself and her apartment and stay active for a long time.
