At Little Brothers, every volunteer brings the warmth and humanity that defines our mission. Today, we shine a light on Dominique, a cornerstone of our community for over 30 years. His exceptional dedication to Great Friends deserves to be celebrated.
A Gentle and Genuine Presence
Dominique has been volunteering with Little Brothers since 1993. He started modestly, offering his help wherever needed. It was about ten years later that he felt ready to accompany elderly people at the end of life.
Today, he devotes his Wednesdays and Sundays to visiting several Great Friends, many of whom are living with cognitive impairments.
“Each visit is different. You have to live in the present moment.”
He doesn’t just stop by — he stays, he listens, he adapts. Every interaction is unique. Every moment, valuable.
The Art of Being There Until the End
For over 20 years, Dominique has accompanied people at the end of life with deep care and gentleness. He didn’t rush into this kind of commitment — he eased into it, guided by personal experiences and a desire to give meaning to moments often left unspoken.
“These are strong connections. You have to be fully present.”
No need for big words — sometimes, simple presence is enough. That’s what Dominique offers: a fully human, non-judgmental presence.
One Mission: Bring Joy
Even in delicate situations, Dominique brings energy and warmth. He enters a room with a smile, asks questions, shakes hands, jokes, lightens the mood.
“My goal is to make them laugh. To bring them into the present.”
These small, seemingly insignificant moments often become the foundation of meaningful bonds. Some Great Friends tell him it feels like they’ve known him forever — even after just a few minutes. For Dominique, that’s the greatest compliment.
A Story Woven with Humanity
Dominique began volunteering shortly after his mother passed away. Looking back, he sees how this commitment was part of his healing process.
“I’ve always been surrounded by older people. It just feels natural.”
He was paired with Mrs. Baribeau for ten years — a bond that deeply marked his journey. She reminded him of his mother, and over time, became a significant presence in his life.
Even today, Dominique finds that same warmth in every new relationship. For him, Great Friends are like an extension of his family.
An Inspiring Role Model
Dominique doesn’t just give his time — he also gives guidance. He enjoys chatting with younger volunteers, sharing his experience without ever imposing his way.
“Being a volunteer means being available. And being real.”
He never seeks the spotlight. He acts with quiet consistency and deep heart. And as long as he’s able — physically and mentally — he’ll continue.
“As long as I’m healthy, I’ll keep going.”
