What if we changed the forecast this summer?

The elderly near you, living in precarious conditions, are not always ready for periods of extreme heat. They are particularly vulnerable during heat waves, as their bodies have more difficulty regulating themselves, which can lead to serious complications.

Fortunately, your local Little Brothers team is there to ensure that isolated seniors receive the support they need this summer. We’re mobilized to make friendship visits, prevention calls and distribute free supplies (fans, air conditioners, water bottles).

The importance of protecting seniors during heatwaves

Increased health risks

Heat is often more damaging to health than poor air quality.

Heat stroke

Heat stroke is the most serious effect of heat. It can occur suddenly and lead to death in the very short term if left untreated.

Dangers of heat islands

73% of multi-family housing for the elderly are located in heat islands. Imagine your loved ones living in these conditions.

Mr. Dubé: keep your windows and curtains closed during the day.

“I open them in the evening to let the air in, which is then fresher and will keep the air in my apartment bearable the next day.”

Mr. Corriveau: take your outings in the evening or early morning, when the sun is less strong.

“Then I run into fewer people to chat with, but I pick myself up in the afternoons on cooler days.”

Ms. Vallières: eat fresh food and avoid fat.

“Prepare salads and eat lots of fruit, since it’s full of water. And drink more water than usual!”

Ms. Pelletier: limit your intake of tea, coffee and alcohol.

“As my doctor told me, these products tend to dehydrate the body instead of hydrating it.”

Thanks to your generosity, we are able to take action against the heatwave

Your support enables us to provide essential comfort to seniors during periods of intense heat. We carry out friendly visits, make prevention calls and distribute free fans, air conditioners and water bottles, thus responding concretely and effectively to the needs of seniors vulnerable to heatwaves.
