Celebrating the start of spring and nature’s renewal together
Spring, the bearer of renewal and warmth, brings with it a multitude of reasons to celebrate, especially for seniors who may have endured an isolating and complex winter.
Little Brothers invites you to celebrate this joyous chapter of the year, by engaging in activities that awaken your senses, nourish your spirit and foster social connection with your senior loved ones.
Here are six ways you can make the most of spring in the company of a senior, promoting their well-being and happiness:
1. Social reconnexion:
Spring is the best time to get together with friends, neighbors and family. Although the return to social life can be tricky, a gradual approach allows you to fully appreciate this season in complete safety. Don’t hesitate to take the initiative and call the elderly people around you who live alone to plan a little get-together in the open air and exchange a few words. They’ll be delighted.
2. The benefits of vitamin D:
Longer days provide an essential source of vitamin D. Enjoying the sun can quickly improve morale and well-being. Don’t hesitate to suggest a trip into the fresh air, so that a senior who hasn’t seen the sun for a long time can benefit from its beneficial rays. However, careful exposure to the sun is recommended.
3. Outdoor walks:
As the snow melts, clear sidewalks invite seniors with reduced mobility to resume their outdoor walks. Walking, which offers both physical and mental health benefits, can have a significant impact.
As Great Friend Robert says: “One day, I was feeling a bit down. I decided to go for a walk in the neighborhood, on Chapleau Street. As I walked, I saw six cats! I said to myself: now I understand why this street is called “Chat” pleau! This made me smile, and a lady coming in the opposite direction saw the whole scene and said: “I see, sir, that you love cats.
I then told her my thought, which made her laugh heartily! It was the start of a gentle conversation that lasted for over 15 minutes. I continued walking, with a smile that had brightened up my day. “
4. Flowers and gardens:
The blooming of flowers heralds the end of winter. Take the time to share an activity with a senior loved one and enjoy the emotional benefits of flowers together, by cultivating a garden or visiting places like the Montreal Botanical Garden, or simply a park near your home.
5. The return of the birds:
The return of migratory birds heralds the arrival of fine weather. Installing a bird feeder offers an opportunity to participate in and observe the diversity of species, and to rejoice in their arrival. Listen carefully, and you’ll hear them chirping!
6. Prepare your outdoor patio:
With the arrival of the fresh air, why not take advantage of the opportunity to help a senior member of your family and friends set up their terrace? Or sweep the floor, take out the furniture and put a chair in the sun. It’s a significant change of scenery and an invigorating way to signal the end of winter.
